CBAM stands for Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, also known as Carbon Tariff or Carbon Border Adjustment Tax (CBAT), is a mechanism involving imports of products from carbon-intensive industries, i.e., the EU levies a tax on the carbon emissions of some imported goods.
◉ Service Background
As the problem of global climate change becomes increasingly serious, countries have taken measures to limit greenhouse gas emissions. However, differences in climate policies, energy structures and industrial layouts among different countries have resulted in different processes and efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Therefore, in order to realize a fair reduction of global carbon emissions, some countries have advocated and implemented a carbon tariff system to prevent countries with lax carbon emission policies from crowding out domestic green industries with high-emission goods and services through external trade and inhibiting the market development trend of green environmental protection. Among them, the EU Carbon Boundary Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a typical example.
