ISO 14067 Product Carbon Footprint Verification

In 2020, President Xi Jinping officially announced that China aims to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. China's commitment has greatly increased global attention to climate change. Amid the global wave of low-carbon concepts, the term "carbon footprint" has garnered significant attention as an indicator of greenhouse gas emissions, introduced by research institutions to identify and assess the carbon emissions of products. Internationally, various governments and relevant agencies have been conducting research on carbon footprint assessment methods and continuously developing carbon footprint assessment standards or specifications. Building upon carbon footprint assessments, carbon footprint certification is also evolving.

CTI Certification has numerous domestic and international greenhouse gas qualifications, being a professional certification body approved by CNCA and accredited by CNAS, with an independent third-party impartial status. We can provide you with product carbon footprint verification and carbon labeling services based on ISO 14067:2018 Greenhouse gases -- Carbon footprint of products -- Requirements and guidelines for quantification and communication.

What is a Product Carbon Footprint?

Typically, it refers to the various greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of a product throughout its entire lifecycle, from raw materials to production (or service provision), distribution, use, and disposal/recycling stages.

By quantifying all significant greenhouse gas emissions and removals in the lifecycle of a product or selected processes, the potential contribution of the product to global warming is calculated, expressed in terms of carbon dioxide equivalents.

What is a Product Carbon Label?

A carbon label informs consumers in the form of a label about the greenhouse gas emissions (carbon footprint) of a product throughout its entire lifecycle, from raw materials, manufacturing, transportation, and disposal to recycling.

A carbon footprint label discloses the carbon emissions for the entire lifecycle of a product or each stage of the product's lifecycle; a carbon emission reduction label does not disclose carbon emissions data, only indicating that the product's carbon emissions are below a certain established standard or level; a carbon offset label also does not disclose specific carbon emissions data, but indicates that the product's carbon footprint has been fully offset. Some businesses claiming to have "zero carbon products" also use such labels.

As a specific form of corporate carbon management disclosure, carbon labeling currently appears to be more driven by the need for showcasing a green image by companies. It is foreseeable that with the continuous improvement of domestic carbon emission management policies and alignment with more regional carbon labeling systems abroad, carbon labeling will increasingly appear on products we purchase daily.

Product Carbon Footprint Assessment Standards:

- ISO 14040:2006 Environmental management - Life cycle assessment - Principles and framework

- ISO 14044:2006 Environmental management - Life cycle assessment - Requirements and guidelines

- ISO 14067:2018 Greenhouse gases - Carbon footprint of products - Requirements and guidelines for quantification and communication

- PAS 2050:2011 Specification for the assessment of the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of goods and services

About ISO 14067:2018 Greenhouse Gases - Carbon footprint of products - Requirements and guidelines for quantification and communication:

In August 2018, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) released ISO 14067:2018 Greenhouse gases - Product carbon footprint - Quantification requirements and guidelines, replacing the Technical Specification ISO/TS 14067:2013, and elevating ISO 14067:2018 to an international standard status. ISO 14067:2018 is an internationally recognized ISO standard for quantifying product carbon footprints. The standard specifies principles, requirements, and guidelines for quantifying and reporting product carbon footprints, providing a unified norm for businesses to evaluate product carbon emissions and effectively promote the assessment of green goods or services.

Benefits of Product Carbon Footprint Verification:

- Product carbon footprints disclose a company's product lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, helping companies understand the impact of their products on climate change and take feasible measures to reduce carbon emissions in the supply chain, supporting the achievement of dual carbon goals.

- Through analysis of product carbon footprints, companies can enhance internal operations, energy saving, emission reduction, cost savings, and utilize it as a marketing strategy to gain competitive advantages. Furthermore, it serves as an effective means to meet market demands and facilitate communication.

- Product carbon footprints are also an effective way for companies to demonstrate to their stakeholders how they are addressing climate issues, helping consumers and business partners make better business decisions.
